Michael Saggus Surfboards
Michael Saggus should be a household name in the surfboard world. He began shaping at just 16 in Coffs Harbour, NSW, surrounded by a local scene of innovative shapers like Trevor Pollard, John Blanch, Rodney Judd, and Bill Tolhurst. By the time Californian industry legend Bob Cooper joined, Michael was part of a tight-knit group of adventurous surfer/shaper/designers constantly pushing each other in both the surf and the shaping bays.
In 1974, Michael visited the USA and ended up staying nearly a decade in California, shaping in Santa Barbara as first co-shaper for Rennie Yater at Yater Surfboards and ghost-shaping for Al Merrick at Channel Islands during the era of Tom Curren. Known for his unique concaves — particularly on fish and mid-length boards — Michael turned heads in the water and left a lasting mark on the rapidly evolving surfboard industry.
After a successful career in high-end corporate photography, Michael returned to shaping, inspired by surfers seeking open-minded and varied designs. Today, Michael Saggus Shapes is based on the South Coast of NSW, crafting boards with Australian blanks and materials, shaped and glassed locally with uncompromising quality.
Michael also continues his connection to California by shaping Liddle Surfboards in Australia, carrying on the legacy of Greg Liddle’s hull designs with precision and care.
