Bondi Beach is one of the most famous beaches in the world, but knowing the lineup, conditions, and surf etiquette can make or break your session. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned surfer, here’s what you need to know before paddling out.
THE INS 🏄♀️
✅ Best Surf Conditions – Bondi works best on a S / SE to E swell with offshore W/NW/N/NE winds. Swell between 2-4ft is ideal, bigger days can get heavy, with lots of close outs. Bondi is a South swell magnet.
✅ Where to Surf –
- South Bondi (left and right handers & steeper waves) – Best for advanced surfers.
- Middle of the Beach (sandbanks shift with tides) – Good for intermediates.
- North Bondi (softer, smaller waves) – Best for beginners and longboarders.
✅ Mid to High Tide is Often Best – While conditions vary, Bondi’s sandbanks tend to work better from mid to high tide, offering cleaner and more rideable waves.
✅ Respect the Flags – The red and yellow flags mark the swimming zones. Never surf between the flags—lifeguards will move you out quickly.
✅ Dodge the Crowds – weekdays offer the best chance of scoring an uncrowded session.
THE OUTS 🚫
❌ Crowds Can Be Brutal – Bondi is one of the busiest surf spots in Australia. Be patient and respect priority rules.
❌ Drop-Ins & Snaking – With so many surfers in the lineup, wave etiquette matters. Don’t drop in on someone else’s wave, and wait your turn.
❌ Strong Rips – The infamous Backpackers Rip (south end) can sweep you out fast. If you're unsure, stay closer to shore or surf with a mate.
❌ Shorebreak Can Be Heavy – On bigger swells, Bondi’s shorey packs a punch—be mindful when paddling in or getting caught inside.
